CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA – Northwestern defeated top-seeded Stanford 3-2 in the national championship match, claiming its first ɬַ Division I Women’s Golf Championship.
Northwestern is the eighth different Division I women’s program to win a national team title in the match play era (since 2015). The Wildcats won their third tournament of the year on the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (6,330 yards/par 72). The Wildcats have now finished in the top 15 in nine of the last 10 ɬַ championships.
Junior Dianna Lee clinched the title on the No. 18 green, securing Northwestern’s third point, with the win over Andrea Revuelta of Stanford, 1UP. Lee, the 2023 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and San Diego native, continued her clutch weekend after recording the winning point for the Wildcats in Tuesday’s semifinal.
“Obviously, I was so nervous and my hands were shaking. Who wouldn’t be nervous?,” said Dianna Lee. “It’s not like I have nerves of steel or anything, but sometimes you have to let muscle memory doing it’s job and that’s what I think I did.”

After leading by as many as three holes with five to play, Dianna Lee was able to shorten the lead to one through 15. received match victories from Dianna Lee, senior Lauryn Nguyen, 1UP over Paula Marin Sampedro and freshman Hsin Tai Lin, 3&2 over Meja Örtengren. Stanford was able to keep it close with match wins by Megha Ganne, 5&4 over Ashley Yun, and Kelly Xu, 1UP over Elise Lee.
“It is surreal. Things are moving really slow right now,” said Northwestern head coach Emily Fletcher. “I don’t think it’s really hitting. I think more than doing what people don’t think you can do is doing what this group thought they could do. And that’s all they did.”
Northwestern, led by six-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Fletcher, last lead the Wildcats to an appearance in the championship match came in 2017 when they finished runner up to Arizona State.
“They went out to be themselves,” said Fletcher. “They went out to compete as hard as they could and that was going to be enough. Stanford is an incredible program and I have so much respect for them. I’m so grateful. I think the belief and the way our players kept on fighting. They hung in and it paid off in the end.”
Stanford, which was making its second-straight appearance in the match play final and third in the last four years, fell behind on the front nine in three of Northwestern’s clinching matchups.
“They are all coming back next year. We had a great year and I know there is going to be some learning from this,” said Stanford head coach Anne Walker. “You learn the most when you lose and it’s a great opportunity to do that and to grow from this moment.”
After losing her first two match play rounds as a freshman in 2023, Stanford junior Ganne has now won five straight in match play over the past two years.
