Breaking down George Mason baseball's new ɬ﷬ַ record of a 23-run inning

Breaking down George Mason baseball's record-setting 23-run inning

Just another week in college baseball where history was made.

George Mason entered on the record books on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 with an ɬ﷬ַ-record 23 runs scored in one inning. This was during a 26-6 win over Holy Cross, breaking an ɬ﷬ַ Division I record that has stood for 42 years.

We were just turning our heads at Oregon, which scored 35 runs in a game a week prior, and a couple weeks ago when a 7-inning game between Rhode Island and William and Mary had 58 total runs scored (36-22).

Then this — the Patriots scoring more than 20 runs in an inning, which is quite insane to even think about. What is even more mind blowing is that they scored those 23 runs without a single home run — and no triples either.

Here's how they got there: 11 hits (five doubles), eight batters walked, five batters hit by pitch and three errors. Either way, 19 straight George Mason batters reached base. Holy Cross used five pitchers in the inning, taking three relievers 87 pitches to record one combined out, with two of its pitchers surrendering a combined 10 runs without getting an out.

The previous ɬ﷬ַ record for most runs in an inning was 21. It was accomplished three times, by Valparaiso in 2010, Wichita State in 1984 and Penn in 1983. No one has broken it till now for over 40 years.

Pretty astonishing to say the least.
