MSU's Jordan Westburg tied College World Series record for RBI

Mississippi State freshman Jordan Westburg entered Tuesday's College World Series game against North Carolina batting .243 this season with just one home run and 23 RBI. He left TD Ameritrade Park with a 3-for-4 performance against the Tar Heels one triple shy of the cycle with a CWS record-tying seven RBI in MSU's 12-2 win.

The Bulldogs' No. 9 hitter broke the game open with a grand slam in the top of the second inning – the 49th grand slam in CWS history, doubling his season home run total – before hitting a bases-clearing, three-RBI double during Mississippi State's eight-run eighth inning.

He became just the sixth player in College World Series history to drive in seven runs in a game. Here are the co-record holders:

Year Player School Result
1954 Carl Thomas Arizona W, 12-1 Oregon
1981 Stan Holmes Arizona State L, 11-10 Oklahoma State (13 inn.)
1994 Mark Kotsay Cal State Fullerton W, 10-3 Florida State
1998 Wes Rachels Southern California W, 21-14 Arizona State
2001 Kris Bennett Tennessee W, 19-12 Georgia
2018 Jordan Westburg Mississippi State W, 12-2 North Carolina

Mark Kotsay is the only other player on the list above who hit a grand slam as part of his seven-RBI performance. Kotsay, in fact, holds the CWS career record with two grand slams in his career.
